Never Lose Hope. Anything is possible. The following case study is nothing short of being a miracle! It reveals the efficacy of laser-assisted hatching technology in infertility treatment while enumerating how our sincere consultant physicians and specialists made use of this latest medical treatment procedure and put a smile on the face of a couple facing acute infertility related problems. This is the encouraging story of Mrs. Prativa Banerjee and her husband (name changed).
When Mrs. Banerjee came to our fertility center in Kolkata she had already been too depressed and disappointed about her infertility issue. She had already undergone 4 attempts of IVF in different IVF centers in Kolkata with no success so far. She was finally referred to us by a mutual friend. Her complete investigations were done and showed that hers is a case of PCOS with the presence of asthenospermia (low sperm motility) in her husband. Our doctors (especially Dr. Aindri Sanyal, a very talented and dedicated member of our Genome Team) went through her case history and assured her that there was still a ray of hope waiting to regale her. As a matter of fact, recent meta-research (comparison of different relevant researches) showed that women, who have undergone repeated IVF treatments without results, double their chances of pregnancy by use of (LAH) Laser Assisted Hatching technology.
LAH is one of the most effective methods to help the fertilized egg to hatch and attach to the uterus. Pregnancy cannot occur unless the human embryo hatches. In females without any fertility-related problems, an unfertilized egg is naturally surrounded by a shell called zona pellucida, which keeps the cells of the embryo together. During the cleavage stages and ‘in vitro culture’ of the human embryo, zona pellucida gets harder, possibly due to the culture conditions. This may tend to harden the eggshell inhibiting hatching. The situation may occur in women who are 37 years of age and above and to those treated with higher doses of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). LAH or Laser Assisted Hatching is a gentle and safe way to weaken a part of (hardened) zona pellucida followed by transferring of the embryo into the woman’s womb.
Mrs. Banerjee was counseled to undergo IVF with ICSI procedure. Hence, her uterus was adequately prepared using medication and finally, embryo transfer was done. Mrs. Prativa Banerjee conceived in her first attempt at IVF embryo transfer and had a twin pregnancy. Her pregnancy was closely supervised.
Now you might be wondering what her status is right now. Well, she is definitely experiencing the best phase of her life – motherhood! The sooner we had been through with our bit she was admitted in the hospital for the same and her cesarean section was done after completing 8 months of pregnancy and she gave birth to twins - a boy and a girl. Mrs. Prativa Banerjee actually got more than she had asked for. What was more, a joyous moment for us was when she dropped by our clinic with two kids and with a celestial smile on her face and gave us a thank you note for our sincere efforts!
